Test Overview

Applying for the Test
You can apply by post or online.

By post: Get an application form from any Garda Station or Motor Tax Office. Send the completed form with a cheque for the test fee, to:

You will need a credit or debit card to pay the fee.

Waiting Time
Currently the waiting time is 6-8 weeks. For up to date information check the RSA website.

The Driving Test
You should be at the test centre, and have in your possession your Learner Permit and letter of appointment, at least 10 minutes early. It is very important to double check the appointment details. Ensure it refers to you and that the date, time and location are correct.

You must be insured and the vehicle must be roadworthy (you will be required to sign a statement to this effect) and make sure that it is clean. Among other things the brake and indicator bulbs must be working and the tyres must be in good condition with at least 1.6mm thread depth. It must display current Insurance and Tax discs as well as an NCT disc if applicable. Display proper L plates front and back.
If you are late or fail to meet any of the other requirements you will forfeit the test fee and will have to re-apply.

The test will last for about 40 minutes. Your driving skills will be assessed while you drive under various road and traffic conditions. As well as being asked questions on the rules of the road you will be asked to:

  • Demonstrate hand signals
  • Work the secondary controls such as wipers, windscreen washers etc.
  • Demonstrate the technical checks such as air pressure, condition of tyres etc.

In short you will have to demonstrate that you:

  • know the rules of the road
  • have the knowledge and skill to drive competently in accordance with these rules
  • drive with due regard for the safety and convenience of other road users.

On passing the test you will be issued with a certificate of competency. Congratulations! It allows you to apply to your local Motor Tax Office for your full driving licence.
If you fail, you will receive a detailed report on the faults that occurred during the test.
